My name is Stephanie. I am a 28-year-old female and I live in Calgary, Canada. This is my story…

Two years ago, I was approached by a man who claimed to be an Uber driver. I accepted the ride but unfortunately, this man was not an Uber driver; I was raped and assaulted.

I am extremely grateful to be alive.

Since my assault, I have had an incredibly challenging Mental Health journey. I’ve experienced shock, guilt, shame and depression. Depression to me feels like a dark black cloud looming over your head every day. Some days it clears slightly, but you can see it waiting for you in the distance.

I knew I would not survive if I did not get professional help. Although it was a long process to find the right fit (which is why you cannot give up on your search), I found a trauma specialist who saved my life. She has helped me understand how trauma affects your subconscious mind and provided crucial coping and healing techniques. Without professional help, I do not know where I would be today.

There are many things that have helped me on my journey. Fitness is what gives me drive and strength both physically and mentally. Running, yoga and boxing is truly therapeutic for me. Spending time with family and friends always lifts my spirits. I have learned to set boundaries and I now know when I need some quiet time to myself. I NEVER said no to plans in the past. But now, I recognize when I need space from others to heal in peace.

Sharing my story with others is always challenging, but I believe there is true power and beauty behind being vulnerable. It has been amazing to see and hear all the stories of others after I opened up and shared my struggles. To those scared to speak up, I need you to know you are strong, you are brave and you are not alone.
